Bucerius Law School in Hamburg is the only private and state-accredited law school in Germany. Its hallmarks are an international focus, practical and performance orientation, and attention to the personal development of the individual student. It was founded in 2000 by the ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius, one of Germany’s largest private foundations, in order to stimulate new developments in higher education and to make a contribution to German legal education. In order to meet this challenge, Bucerius Law School offers an academically-accomplished and bilingual legal education with a focus on International Business Law. Sixteen full-time professional chairs, an Institute for Foundation Law and the Law of Non-Profit Organizations, an Institute for Corporate Law and Capital Markets Law and a Center for Legal Didactics have all been established. Some 150 Ph.D. students - many of them working as research and teaching assistants - and many guest lecturers further enrich the curriculum. A wide range of conferences, external lectures and other international events also take place on the Bucerius campus.
Each October, a class limited to some 100 undergraduate students begins its studies. All undergraduate students take part in the International Exchange Program, spending one trimester at one of Bucerius’ over 80 partner universities around the world. At the same time, selected students from those partner institutions spend one trimester at Bucerius, studying International and Comparative Business Law. In addition, Bucerius students take part in a Studium Generale, study languages in the Law School’s Foreign Language Center and deepen their knowledge in economics. Law School facilities, including the Hengeler Mueller Law Library, are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Bucerius Law School graduates acquire the LL.B. (Bachelor of Laws) degree after ten trimesters of study and are subsequently prepared to complete Germany’s First State Examination in Law. The outstanding performance of Bucerius students on this Examination has proven the success of the Law School´s innovative approach. As a result of their success in this Examination and because of the faculty’s excellent reputation in research, Bucerius leads the rankings of German law schools, and Law School´s graduates are among the most sought-after young lawyers in Germany. Many Bucerius graduates stay and pursue doctoral and postdoctoral studies.
In 2004, Bucerius presented its first executive seminar to young lawyers in Beijing, China, which covered topical issues within EU and German law. Bucerius Education GmbH, a 100 % subsidiary of Bucerius Law School, provides impetus for high-level service formats, as well as for the advanced training of experts and managers from the fields of economics, law and politics.
The Master of Law and Business is the latest addition to the curricular activities of the Law School.
