The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, one of the 16 states of the federation, is the second largest city in Germany with its 1.7 million inhabitants. In this sense, it is a city as well as a state.

Hamburg is also culturally and commercially the center of all of Northern Germany. The metropolitan region consists of 3.5 million people for which Hamburg is the shopping and cultural metropolis. The municipal area with its 755 km2 is seven times the size of Paris and 2.5 times that of London.

Dialogue in the Dark - An exhibition to discover the unseen
The idea of learning to see anew in a totally dark room has caught on. In Hamburg this internationally acclaimed show has become established for the duration of five years in the Speicherstadt as part of a programme to integrate disabled people into the regular work force. Visually impaired or totally blind people will open your eyes in the dark in order to show you a world that isn't any poorer, but different. Familiar things are turned around, things taken for granted will be questioned. In totally dark rooms, everyday situations like a relaxing walk through a park or being out and about in a noisy city will be experienced in quite a new way.

The Planetarium housed since 1930 in the old water tower in the large, lovely Stadtpark. It offers not only a memorable view of the Alster Lake, city center, and airport, but an excellent indoor view of the night skies. The Planetarium has a great Zeiss projector for its astronomy shows.

"You haven't seen Hamburg, if you haven't visited the harbor!" Experience up close the fascinating daily activities at the harbor: the gigantic port panorama, the ships, the docks, and the small canals of the historical Speicherstadt. The Speicherstadt, an ancient brick-built warehouse complex, is the historical center of the port of Hamburg. Even today the smell of roasted coffee and exotic spices lies in the air, experience unforgettable events in an authentic hanseatic setting. In the center of the Speicherstadt is the former auction hall of the coffee market, the capitol of the worldwide coffee trade.

Walk through the old Elbe tunnel under the Elbe River. From the other side, the shipyard island Steinwerder, you can enjoy the unique Elbe panorama with a view of the harbour quay, the Michel and the Rickmer Rickmers. Inside the square, dome-shaped structure at the St. Pauli-Landungsbrücken there are four elevators, large enough to carry people and vehicles 24 metres below the Elbe where two tunnels lead to Steinwerder on the south side of the river. Inaugurated in 1911, the tunnel is still in use today. Open to pedestrians and bikers twenty-four hours every day free of charge.

The spires of Hamburg's cathedrals still shape its skyline today. The 132-metre-high tower of St. Michaelis, the "Michel", is the landmark of the Hanseatic city. Its lookout point offers a marvellous view of Hamburg and the harbor. St. Michaelis, built 1751 - 1762, is northern Germany's most important Baroque church.

With Hamburg's offering of clubs and discos, "durchmachen", or partying the night away, is a local sport. Absolutely the best way to finish off a long night is a wander around the Fish Market in Altona. Some 700 market traders open their stands right on the waters edge every Sunday morning from 5 a.m. to 9.30 a.m. (from October to March not until 7 a.m.). In fact, there is nothing you can't find here: blood sausage and sweets, pastries, fruit, poultry and spices, cheese, candles and new and second-hand clothes. On top of that, jewellery, kitsch, odds and ends, nostalgic items and live animals. And, of course, fish: raw, marinated, boiled, smoked.
If fish turns your stomach first thing in the morning, wait for the return of the animal spirits at the waters edge with a coffee in your hand, while the more courageous can bite heartily into a fried fish roll...
