Bucerius has no on-campus housing. However, we actively assist participants in obtaining housing in Hamburg. Please find five main housing options below:
- Student dormitory housing at Berliner Tor (only if you are not older than 34!)
- Gosslerhaus housing (rooms in a shared apartment and single apartments)
- Room subletting through other MLB or Bucerius students or alumni
- Independent long-term / private housing: online classifieds, newspapers, housing agencies
- Use of short stay accommodation
We strongly recommend that you finalize your housing arrangements by the middle of July at the latest. It is more difficult to contact people and make arrangements in July/August because of the vacation season.
If you have further questions regarding housing in Hamburg, please contact maite.baeurle(at)law-school.de.
There are several dormitories run by the "Studierendenwerk Hamburg". If you are not older than 34, you can apply for a room in a modern dormitory at the Berliner Tor. In this dormitory, we have reserved 15 furnished rooms on the upper floors (some of them with a nice view over Hamburg) with fully-equipped kitchens and bathrooms exclusively for MLB students. Because of its central location, Berliner Tor is easily reachable from Bucerius Law School by public transport (approx. 15 minutes), and, for those who enjoy walking or riding the bicycle, the route from the dormitory to Bucerius campus is also very nice: passing by the Alster lake, the city center and the gardens of "Planten un Blomen". Each housing unit contains three to four private bedrooms, a fully-equipped kitchen and one to two bathrooms (shared with men and women). Each room has cable TV and W-LAN. A meeting room on the ground floor is available to all residents for cultural events, workgroups, film evenings etc. In the basement, there are parking spaces for bikes, a bike repair workshop and coin-operated washing machines. Once a week, the dormitory staff provides a basic cleaning of bathroom, kitchen and corridor floors. Monthly rent is € 300, which must be paid through a monthly money transfer order. The rent is on an all-inclusive basis and includes the costs for heating, electricity, water, bed linens, dishes, the cleaning of the staircases, cable TV, internet and house administration. A deposit of € 300 is required and is payable by money transfer or cash to the house manager on the day you move in. It will not be possible to choose your roommate/s, change or sublet your room.
On the basis of your reservation via the Response Sheet, we will forward your e-mail address to Studierendenwerk Hamburg who in turn will send you the housing contract directly. You will then need to sign the contract immediately and send it back to the Studierendenwerk Hamburg via regular mail - not email. The signed contract is binding for one year from August 15, 2010 to August 14, 2011. If you wish to stay longer, you can apply for another room individually.
More information on the dormitory at the Berliner Tor and some pictures of the building can be found here.
If you are 35 or older, we can assist you in finding a room in another student dormitory in which apartments are generally shared with four people or more and are usually not very modern and well-located. For this reason, the monthly rent varies between € 220 and € 300 which includes utilities. Please let us know if you need help finding another accomodation.
The beautiful villa "Goßlerhaus" is located in the lovely and quiet area in the quarter of Blankenese, one of the most exclusive quarters in Hamburg. Supermarkets, bakeries, pharmacies and the metro station are only 400 meters away. However, the villa is 13 km away from the Bucerius campus. A 30 minute ride on public transportation will bring you there. Bucerius Education GmbH, a 100% subsidiary of Bucerius Law School, organizes internal and external events at Goßlerhaus. Since 2009, we have an allocation of four small rooms (approx. 12 sqm, € 330/month) and one bigger room (approx. 20 sqm, € 450/month) in the basement. All rooms are fully equipped, with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities and can be rented for twelve months. A weekly general cleaning service of the shared floor, kitchen and bathrooms is included in the monthly rent. There is also an apartment for a couple in the attic (€ 650/month).

Due to the high monthly rent prices in Hamburg, especially in central locations, we recommend that you share a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment with other people. Please be aware that if you do not bring your own furniture, you should look for "Möblierte Zimmer/ Wohnung" ("furnished room/apartment").
Agency City-wohnen
This agency offers contacts for interim housing and will bill you for its services. The progressive commission fee is staggered according to the number of months you contract to rent, e.g.: up to 1 month – 30 % of one month's rent; up to 6 months – 105 % of one month's rent etc. The legal rate of VAT (currently 19%) will be added to all commissions. Bucerius Law School has worked out a cooperation agreement with the respective agency. Please inform the agency that you are a Bucerius student (customer number is 25410) to receive a 15 % discount on the commission fee.

Short-term Accomodation
It is of course easier to find an apartment once you have arrived in Hamburg, as you can make an appointment to look at apartments and meet landlords. In this case, we would recommend that you stay a few nights in a low-priced hotel or in a youth hostel (€ 10/night and up) while you are searching.
Please click here for addresses of hostels & centrally located hotels in Hamburg.
In the dormitories run by the "Studierendenwerk," there is also a limited number of guestrooms available, which can be rented for a period of up to three months. These rooms can be rented directly from the House Administration in the respective halls of residence. We can provide you with recommendations regarding pros and cons of different student dormitories.
If you prefer to look for accomodation when you are in Hamburg, we strongly recommend to arrive a few days earlier.
